"Representatives of former ABC Color newspaper editor Aldo Zuccolillo told the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on Tuesday [Aug. 19] that the Paraguayan state violated his right to freedom of expression and thought as a result of a criminal conviction for offenses against honor.

The case before the court concerns Paraguay’s alleged international responsibility for violations of freedom of expression, the principle of legality, and judicial guarantees to the detriment of Zuccolillo, who was also the newspaper’s founder.

The events date back to Dec. 24, 1998, when then-Sen. Juan Carlos Galaverna filed a criminal complaint against Zuccolillo and ABC Color for libel, slander and defamation. He claimed the newspaper had published at least 15 'manipulative, false, distorted and biased' articles aimed at discrediting and ridiculing him."
