Man sentenced to 14 years for attempted murder of Mexican journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva

"Armando Escárcega Valdéz, also known as 'El Patrón,' acknowledged to federal court authorities that he led a criminal cell responsible for the attack on journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva, which was carried out on the orders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG, for its Spanish acronym). The admission of guilt came as part of an abbreviated procedure, in which he accepted responsibility for the crimes.

As a result, this Tuesday [Dec. 16] he was sentenced to 14 years in prison for attempted aggravated homicide and aggravated criminal conspiracy.

On Dec. 15, 2022, a motorcycle with two occupants, one of them a gunman, caught up with the van in which Ciro Gómez Leyva was traveling home; at full speed, the gunman fired nine shots, first from the side, then from the front.

Thanks to his armored vehicle—and the fact that the attackers were unaware of it—the most significant attack on a Mexican journalist in the last four decades failed."
