“During the inauguration of the still-unfinished Via Expresa Sur megaproject, Lima Mayor Rafael López Aliaga held a press conference, during which he attacked journalist Gustavo Gorriti and threatened to kill him using slang from the Peruvian underworld. 'We have to take this gentleman out once and for all,' he said, indicating that Gorriti would be an obstacle to the implementation of a military tribunal in Peru. 'An urban terrorist is a military target; he must have a military tribunal; if he goes to a Gorriti-style fiscal tribunal, he’ll be released immediately,' he added.

The death threat wasn't the only time he targeted the journalist. At the same event, López Aliaga linked Gorriti to former mayor Susana Villarán, who is facing trial for alleged illegal contributions from the Brazilian construction companies Odebrecht and OAS. 'She's a partner of his (Gorriti), and the two of them make up a group of corrupt individuals who have taken advantage of Peru,' the mayor of Lima asserted, without providing evidence to support his claim."
