Mexican press freedom organization urges state agency to reinstate security detail for threatened journalist

"On Friday, Feb. 20, journalist Fernanda de Luna Ferral was notified by the Veracruz Public Security Secretariat (SSP, for its Spanish initials) about the withdrawal of her security detail, even though these types of measures are carried out in coordination with the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, an agency that did not request the cancellation of said measure.

Fernanda is an independent journalist and human rights activist seeking justice after the murder of her mother, Maria Elena Ferral, in March 2020. Since then, Fernanda has been the victim of multiple acts of violence and aggression, including a shooting. In 2024 and 2025, respectively, two of the alleged perpetrators in the journalist's murder were released, citing not only supposed irregularities in the proceedings led by the Veracruz State Attorney General's Office (FGE), but also a 'lack of evidence.'"
