Mexico: Article 19 condemns audios in which former governor suggests 'starving journalists to death'

"ARTICLE 19 categorically rejects statements made by Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, current president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI, by its acronym in Spanish) against the press. These statements point to the relationship of violence and submission that prevails between the political authorities and the press, as well as an intolerance to public criticism and scrutiny.

On May 24, an audio was published on social media, in which Moreno Cárdenas is heard – presumably during his term as Governor of the State of Campeche – saying that he would verbally attack businessman Alexandro Arceo and where he attacks the press, using precariousness as a weapon of censorship:

‘[…] journalists should not be shot to death, dude, they should be starved to death.’"
