Mexico: Governor of Jalisco sues journalist for moral damage after publication of articles

"The governor of the Mexican state of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, announced on Dec. 27 that he had filed lawsuits against the journalist and researcher Ricardo Ravelo Galó, of the SinEmbargo news outlet, for alleged moral damage.

[...]

The governor's reaction comes after the journalist published two articles on Dec. 17 and 24part of a journalistic investigation into organized crime in the state, in which he divulges information that alleges that the Alfaro government offers protection to an organized crime group and even points out possible links between the governor's close circle and leadership activities within a criminal organization.

"ARTICLE 19 considers it extremely worrying that the governor intends to censor information and inhibit the debate and flow of information on issues of public interest, since as an official he must guarantee the fundamental right to inform and be informed."
