New death threats against journalist Aníbal Gómez in Pedro Juan Caballero, Paraguay

"Journalist Aníbal Gómez Caballero, with a long career in the city of Pedro Juan Caballero, has received new death threats via WhatsApp related to his radio journalism work and his reports on possible corruption in local politics. The Paraguayan Journalists' Union and the International Federation of Journalists absolutely condemn these threats and demand that the authorities guarantee the life and safety of his colleague and all journalists in the city."

Gómez Caballero, who already had special protection and custody due to prior threats, publicly denounced that a congressman had intervened in the investigation into the 2020 murder of journalist Leo Veras, seeking to influence the journalist's wife to benefit one of the suspects in the crime. Following this complaint, the colleague received threats via WhatsApp and text messages directed at him and his family, which has led him to request the reinforcement of protection protocols and an investigation into these events, a process in which he was supported by the Paraguayan Journalists' Safety Roundtable."
