Nicaragua: News outlet denounces disappearance of journalist critical of Daniel Ortega's regime

"The Nicaraguan opposition newspaper La Prensa denounced on Monday (Oct. 23) the disappearance of journalist Guillermo Miranda, a columnist for the newspaper and a leader of the Nicaraguan Resistance War Veterans Forces, a group opposed to the ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front.

The news outlet said in a statement that Miranda, who was allegedly arrested last Thursday (Oct. 19) in the city of Granada, has not answered the telephone for days and had not sent his opinion article for publication this week.

At least 1,329 violations of press freedom were recorded in Nicaragua in the last five years, including one murder, stripping journalists of their nationality, and the closure and expropriation of news outlets."
