President of Uruguay vetoes controversial article of new media law on 'impartiality' of the press

"This Thursday [Aug. 8], the House of Representatives of Uruguay approved a new media law with a controversial article on the 'impartiality' of information that, as expected, was vetoed hours later by President Luis Lacalle Pou.

Article 72 established 'the duty to provide citizens with information, analysis, opinions, comments and assessments in a complete, impartial, serious, rigorous, plural and balanced manner between and with respect to political actors.'

Legislators from the government coalition led by Lacalle Pou agreed to vote in favor of the initiative promoted by the Executive with the expectation of a partial presidential veto, which the president applied in the afternoon. Since coming to power in 2020, the Lacalle Pou administration has promoted a new media law because it considered the previous one 'hyper-regulatory.'"
