Roche Health Journalism Award recognizes reports on maternal healthcare and migration in Latin America

On Thursday night (Oct. 24), at a ceremony held in Miami, the winners of the 2024 Roche Health Journalism Award were announced. Among the awarded works, two highlight issues from Latin America. In the Digital Journalism category, the report “Challenges and solutions to improve prenatal coverage in riverside communities in the Amazon,” produced by Amazônia Vox and Canal Futura, from Brazil, won. The multimedia work explores the difficulties women in isolated communities in the Amazon face in accessing health care.

In the Sound Journalism category, the podcast “Deported and pregnant: the drama of Haitian women in the Dominican Republic,” produced by El Hilo (USA), a podcast from Rádio Ambulante, addressed the deportation of pregnant Haitian women from the Dominican Republic. The production highlighted discrimination and xenophobia against Haitians in the Caribbean country.

In addition to the Latin American winners, the Daily Coverage category recognized a work published by the newspaper El Mundo (Spain), which addressed the serious public and social health problem related to suicide in the country. The winners in all categories received medals, diplomas and the opportunity to participate in a training program in health journalism, which will be held in 2025 in a Latin American city yet to be named by the Gabo Foundation.
