“After three weeks in silence due to the murder of journalist Mardonio Mejía, which occurred on Jan. 24, Sonora Stéreo returned to the air. The only station in San Pedro, Sucre, resumed its musical programming on Feb. 5, the day on which Angélica Mejía, Mardonio's eldest daughter, paid tribute to her father and addressed words of gratitude to the inhabitants of San Pedro for their solidarity. However, a month after the crime, the station operates without its morning news and without knowing exactly the reasons for the murder and who ordered it.
Mardonio Mejía was murdered by hitmen on a motorcycle, at the door of his house, which also sometimes served as the station. In conversation with the Press and Society Institute (FLIP, for its acronym in Spanish), Angélica expressed a feeling of fear and insecurity, because in recent days she has noticed that unknown and suspicious people have circulated near the house. She also mentioned that a hooded person attended her father's funeral.”
