The US State Department stated that, regarding freedom of expression for members of the press and other media, independent media outlets were active and expressed a wide variety of viewpoints. "However, reporters covering organized crime, including their ties to corrupt public officials, have acknowledged practicing self-censorship due to the danger that investigative journalism creates for them and their families," the report states. They also point to lower advertising revenue, either due to the Covid-19 pandemic or pressure from companies against corruption allegations, which resulted in the media becoming less independent.
