Journalist Bryan Leonel Guerra died on March 3 after being shot less than a week earlier in the city of Chiquimula in eastern Guatemala.
Sala de Redacción, which reported the news via Facebook, urged authorities to investigate the shooting, which took place on Feb. 27.
Guerra had reported death threats via social networks, according to a statement posted by the Association of Guatemalan Journalists following the shooting (APG, for its acronym in Spanish). The organization said that the National Civil Police and the public prosecutor had not deemed them important.
The prosecutor of crimes against journalists of the public prosecutor’s office said it hadn’t been told of any prior reports of threats against Guerra, according to elPeriódico.
“This new act of aggression against journalists is condemnable and even more worrying that we continue in a state of apprehension, threat and harassment of the parallel terror groups that operate in absolute impunity and that with those actions try to silence the free emission of thought and press freedom,” the APG wrote.
Guerra, who was news presenter for TLCOM, was just 25-years-old and was also vice president of the Network of Social Communicators of Chiquimula, according to the APG.
