Mexican journalist charged with inciting hatred against local governor, barred from practicing journalism

"Judge Guadalupe Martínez Taboada ordered the prosecution of journalist Jorge Luis González Valdez, former editor of the newspaper Tribuna, for allegedly inciting hatred and violence against the governor [of the Mexican state of Campeche] Layda Sansores. The judge also ordered the closure of the online platform and prohibited González Valdez from practicing journalism.

In an unprecedented decision that was taken after a hearing that lasted more than 12 hours, Judge Martínez Taboada also ordered that Isidro Yerbes, representative of Organización Editorial del Sureste, the publishing company of Tribuna, be put on trial. The defendants said these resolutions ‘set an ominous future for independent journalists.’

Governor Sansores claimed that the digital edition of Tribuna carried out a systematic campaign of personal attacks against her, targeting her specifically because she is a woman. She argued the outlet engaged in a ‘freedom of aggression’ rather than exercising legitimate freedom of expression."
