Do you want to get started in investigative journalism but don’t know where to begin? Do you feel like your reporting could be more in-depth or that you lack the tools to build solid investigations? Then the new FREE Knight Center course is for you.

The new free online course, "Investigative Journalism: First Steps and Key Tools," which will take place in Spanish from Sept. 26 to Oct. 26, 2025, will guide you step by step through the entire process of a news investigation, from initial idea to data organization to publication.

"Investigative Journalism" is led by Lise Olsen, author and investigative editor at the Texas Observer (USA), and Rocío Gallegos, editor and co-founder of La Verdad Juárez (Mexico). Both will share experiences, techniques, and practical tips to help you take your first steps in investigative work.

Over four weeks, you will learn to:

  • Build a solid hypothesis and work plan
  • Develop sources and access public and private documents
  • Apply data journalism tools and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)
  • Care for your personal and digital security while investigating

Additionally, you will hear stories from journalists across the Americas who will show you how they conducted their first investigations and how they approached more complex projects, some of which were recognized internationally.

The course includes interviews with guest journalists, such as:

  • Jorge Luis Sierra (Mexico/Texas), co-founder of the Border Center for Journalists and Bloggers
  • Ronny Rojas (Costa Rica), investigative journalist for Noticias Telemundo
  • Jason Buch (USA), author of the "Follow the Money" series on money laundering
  • Ginna Morelo (Colombia), editor of the data unit at El Tiempo

This course is designed for reporters, editors, communicators and communication students who want to strengthen their investigations with new ideas and techniques.

You do not need advanced investigative experience, only a desire to learn and explore new tools. For the fourth week, it is recommended to have basic knowledge of spreadsheets (Excel or Google Sheets), as students will see how to apply them to data analysis.

The learning experience is flexible, with video classes, interviews, readings, discussion forums, and quizzes. Students can progress at their own pace and participate in weekly live sessions, which will be recorded for those who cannot attend in real time. Upon completion, students will receive a free certificate of completion.

This course is your opportunity to learn how to investigate with rigor, creativity, and security, and to take the first steps into the world of investigative journalism.
