"The Guatemalan Constitutional Court has rejected an appeal by the prosecutor's office seeking to prosecute eight journalists and columnists from the now-defunct media outlet El Periódico who investigated acts of corruption in which judges and prosecutors were implicated.
The Supreme Court's ruling, which is provisional, was announced Tuesday [Aug. 26] through social media. The Special Prosecutor's Office Against Impunity, headed by Rafael Curruchiche, had appealed the Supreme Court of Justice's decision not to grant a provisional injunction allowing the journalists to be brought to trial for their writings.
In February 2023, Judge Jimmi Bremer ordered the prosecutor's office to investigate the journalists as part of the judicial process for alleged conspiracy to obstruct justice charges against renowned journalist José Rubén Zamora, former president of El Periódico, who has been imprisoned for four years without trial or conviction."
