Author who wrote about nepotism and Ecuadoran president receives threatening phone call

The journalist Juan Carlos Calderon, co author of the book El Gran Hermano (Big Brother), was threatened via telephone by an anonymous source, according to Fundamedios. The journalist was threatened: “You will be next.”

The book is a journalistic investigation that denounces alleged acts of nepotism in the millions of public contracts awarded to Fabricio Correa, brother of the Ecuadoran president, Rafael Correa, who has been criticized for his repeated attacks against the press.

In February of this year, the authors of the book, Calderon and Christian Zurita, were sued by President Correa for $10 million in moral damages.

On Thursday, Oct. 20, Correa was expected to testify in court for the case, according to the newspaper El Universo.

According to the lawyer of the journalists, Ramiro Aguilar, the president was "taking refuge" in a legal measure that would allow his testimony to serve as proof, concluding the trial, reported the newspaper Expreso.
