Panamanian ex-president sues newspaper for $5.5 million

Ernesto Pérez Balladares, the ex-president of Panama, filed a civil lawsuit against the newspaper La Prensa for $5.5 million, reported the newspaper La Estrella.

The lawsuit stems from stories published in the newspaper alleging that Pérez Balladares used a bank in the Bahamas to transfer $176 million, according to Crítica.

The ex-president confirmed the lawsuit via his Twitter account, writing that the journalists were irresponsible in publishing false information.

Panama offered asylum to one of the Ecuadoran journalists from El Universo sentenced to three years in prison and $40 million in fines for allegedly defaming President Rafael Correa.
