Brazilian journalist briefly arrested in Syria

On Friday, May 25, a Brazilian journalist was arrested in Syria, and then let free by local authorities shortly after the arrest, according to the news agency EFE.

reporter from the magazine IstoÉ, Klester Cavalcanti, arrived at Beirut, in Lebanon, on Monday, May 28. Everything is back to normal and the journalist can return to Brazil at his convenience, according to the magazine Exame. The journalist did not suffer abuse or threats and is safe.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cavalcanti was arrested by the Syrian government for not going through the Ministry of Information, a procedure required from professionals when entering the country or when traveling to other regions, reported the Agência Brasil.

Syria has experienced protests since the beginning of 2011 because of governmental changes led by dictator Bashar al-Assad.
