Mexican Senators present bill to regulate government spending on advertising

Six Mexican Senators presented a bill to publish public spending for all levels of government in print and electronic media, according to the newspaper El Universal.

The Federal Governmental Communication Law aims to create a citizen and inter-governmental council to monitor spending by public officials similar to the National Media Register that follows audience, circulation and reach of media companies, reported the website Terra and the news agency Notimex.

In the past, organizations like Article 19 and Fundar have criticized the Mexican government for excessive spending on official advertising to reward pro-government media and witholding public advertising funds to punish media outlets critical of the government.
