The International Press Institute is urging authorities in Haiti to consider Georges Henri Honorat's role as a journalist among the possible motives for his shooting last week, citing several instances of journalists targeted for their work in Haiti.
Last week, the Associated Press reported that masked gunmen shot and killed Honorat, the editor-in-chief of prominent Haitian newspaper, Haiti Progres. The assailants shot Honorat twice in front of his home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on March 23, reported the AP.
The newspaper had been receiving anonymous threats over the phone leading up to the killing. The AP reported that a colleague of Honorat’s blamed grassroots organizations for the crime but did not provide specifics.
Honorat was also an aide to the Caribbean nation’s prime minister and secretary general of the country’s Popular National Party, which opposed the Duvalier dictatorships.
