Félix García, a correspondent for several online media outlets and Radio ORO in the southern state of Oaxaca, has reported being attacked by alleged members of the state’s investigative police force, El Universal reports.
García was following a tip that there was a robbery taking place at the local prosecutor’s office, when he was intercepted by three individuals who beat him severely and warned him they knew where he and his family lived, e-Consulta explains.
“What I am denouncing is not only threats against my person, but against the journalistic work that I do,” said García, quoted by El Universal.
The number of attacks against media workers in Mexico has led press groups and international organizations to urge federal authorities to guarantee journalists’ safety.
On Oct. 28, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights urged the government to adopt a system to protect journalists, saying their safety is the government’s responsibility, not that of international organizations, Notimex reports.
