Human rights experts from the United Nations urged the government to take urgent measures to protect journalists in Honduras, where seven media workers have been assassinated since March 1, the AFP and EFE news agencies report.
The U.N.'s special press monitors Frank la Rue, Philip Alston, and Margaret Sekaggya said that several journalists continue receiving death threats despite protective measures ordered by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights/. They also emphasized that the work of journalists is fundamental to promote and guarantee the rights and liberties of Honduran society, Europa Press adds.
In addition to seeking the prosecution of those responsible, the experts again urged the government to protect the physical and psychological integrity of all journalists who have been threatened.
