"'Silence is not an option,' said Salvadoran Óscar Martínez at the Deutsche Welle (DW) Global Media Forum in Bonn [Germany] on Monday [June 19]. The Salvadoran investigative journalist received this year's DW Freedom of Expression Award for his courage and journalistic commitment.
Born in 1983 in El Salvador, the renowned journalist is known throughout Latin America for his investigative work. In one of the world's most dangerous regions, he reports on gang crime, government links to organized crime, migration, and murders committed by the Salvadoran police.
He is also critical of El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele. Since he took office, journalists and human rights defenders have been increasingly discredited and harassed. Martinez, however, is not intimidated."
