‘People struggle to access credible information online’: Freedom House warns of threats to democracy

A report by Freedom House published on Wednesday [October 16] indicates that global internet freedom has declined for the 14th consecutive year, with several Latin American countries following this trend.

Reporting via the internet is becoming increasingly difficult in countries like Venezuela, where many journalists face threats, are convicted for practicing their profession, or simply self-censor due to fear of retaliation from those in power, a Venezuelan journalist told Voice of America.

This and other testimonies fit into the findings of the report “Freedom on the Net 2024: The Fight for Trust in the Internet,” released on Wednesday, which notes that “violent attacks and intimidation aimed at silencing online freedom of expression became widespread over the past year.”
