Arrest of journalist's killer comes after magazine slams prosecutor for inaction

The state attorney of Veracruz, Mexico arrested the suspected killer of journalist Regina Martínez, murdered outside her home last April.

The arrest took place two days after the magazine Proceso criticized that six months had passed without any conviction in the case. Martínez was a reporter for the publication in Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz. The Gulf state is the most dangerous place in Mexico for the press with nine journalists killed in less than two years.

Governor Javier Duarte said the motive for the crime was robbery, according to the website Animal Político.

According to the authorities, Jorge Hernández Silva confessed to his participation in the attack on the journalist while José Adrián Hernández knew the victim, reported the newspaper Imagen del Golfo.

Proceso's director Rafael Rodríguez Castañeda criticized that authorities in Veracruz never asked for information from the publication's staff in its investigation and declared the magazine's skepticism of the investigation's results.
