Arrest warrant for Colombian journalist expires

A warrant for the arrest of a Colombian journalist was suspended by prosecutors on Thursday April 12, when the warrant expired, according to Caracol Radio.

The order against journalist William Parra had been in place since 2010 for alleged ties to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), as the journalist was apparently mentioned several times in emails retrieved from the computer of Raúl Reyes, a former head of the guerrilla group.

The evidence against the journalist was considered illegal, since it was collected in Ecuador and not in Colombia, the high court decided, which also disqualified other supposed sympathizers and activists of the FARC who had been mentioned in Reyes's computer, such as the Spanish Remedios García and the Chilean Manuel Olate, according to the news site Terra.

The journalist can now freely return to Colombia because the warrant, which had caught the attention of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) at the time, is no longer in effect, RCN La Radio said.
