Brazilian journalist Danielly Tonin has been receiving threats since publishing an article that criticized the administration of the mayor of Rondonópolis, the third-largest city in the state of Mato Grosso, reported the news site Prosa e Política on Wednesday, April 4.
Tonin said that after reporting on irregularities in a city advertising campaign, she began receiving threatening phone calls and unusual invitations from the municipal secretary. During one of the calls, the secretary compared the journalist to a roasted chicken. “I didn't clearly understand what he was trying to say, but I felt that if I were to continue publishing criticisms, I would be fried," said the journalist, as quoted by the news agency Notícias Primeira Hora.
The journalist filed an official complaint. The Journalists Union of Mato Grosso and the National Federation of Journalists expressed support for the reporter.
