The president of Brazil's National Association of Newspapers (ANJ), Judith Brito, announced that the organization is creating a board for self-regulation, reported iG. The board could begin to function as soon as the end of this year. The announcement was made during the opening of the 8th Brazilian Congress of Newspapers, in Rio de Janeiro.
The board will have seven members and will examine questions related to the newspaper profession and communication companies affiliated with ANJ, according to O Estado de S. Paulo. The board will be modeled after similar groups in other countries, and will be based on ANJ's ethics code. “With the collapse of the Press Law, we thought we should have a body to regulate the sector," Brito said, as quoted in iG.
The ANJ president also criticized proposals to control the media, O Globo reported.
