Crime reporter investigating killing of Veracruz colleague receives threats, Mexican news magazine says

The Mexican magazine Proceso has accused the authorities of Veracruz of planning to attack the journalist Jorge Carrasco Araizaga, who is investigating the murder of his colleague Regina Martínez.

According to the article, the magazine has information about a meeting between state government officials about plans to retaliate against the journalist for his work that has questioned the investigations into Martínez’s murder.

State attorney general Felipe Amadeo Flores has published a letter denying the allegations and reiterating his commitment to freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Veracruz.  He also urged the magazine to share its evidence to allow for an investigation.

A man was recently sentenced to 38 years in prison for the murder of Martínez, but Proceso put the proceedings into doubt after he claimed that he was tortured until he confessed.

Regina Martínez was murdered in her home on April 28, 2012 in Xalapa, capital of Veracruz.  The authorities said that it was a crime of passion and rejected any link to her work as a journalist.  However, the press freedom organization Artículo 19 has noted the lack of evidence against the man convicted of her murder.
