An appeals court ruled that blogger Dania García would have to pay a $14 fine instead of serving a 20 month prison term for a family dispute, The Associated Press reports.
Garcia and several human rights groups claimed her arrest and original sentence was in retaliation for her work as an independent journalist and her involvement with the “Ladies in White,” a group of wives and mothers of imprisoned dissidents, Reuters and EFE explain.
The leader of the Cuban Human Rights Commission says the ruling is a sign that government leaders are trying to avoid bad international press, BBC adds.
