From a jail in the United States, former Colombian paramilitary commander Diego Fernando Murillo, alias "Don Berna," accused two ex-members of the Colombian national military of being responsible for the killing of journalist and comedian Jaime Garzón on Aug. 13, 1999, reported Caracol Radio.

According to the Colombian magazine Semana, former deputy director of the Administrative Department of Security (DAS in Spanish), José Miguel Narváez, “may have instigated ex-paramilitary chief Carlos Castaño to carry out the killing."

This is not the first time that Narváez has been accused of masterminding Garzón's death. Now, Narváez is in jail in the Colombian district of Facatativá, Cundinamarca, and is being prosecuted for this homicide and other crimes, explained the news agency Europa Press.

Even so, the Inter-American Press Association indicated at the beginning of February that impunity is one of the biggest obstacles for justice in Colombia in regards to the various cases against journalists that remain unsolved.
