Héctor Cordero, a correspondent for TV Guatevisión in Quiché department (northwest of Guatemala City), says he has received phone calls threatening to kill him and warning that his family would pay the consequences for his work, Prensa Libre reports.

According to Guatevisión, a local deputy from the ruling party is behind the threats. The director of the channel, Haroldo Sánchez, voiced his support for Cordero on the air: “If we allow one politician to quiet Cordero, then it will not be worth” the journalist's sacrifice.

Cordero is a member of GuateDigital a network of journalists from the interior of the country.
