Journalist shot in attempted homicide in Brazil

Brazilian journalist Mário Randolfo Marques Lopes was shot but not killed Wednesday, July 6, at his house in the city of Vassouras, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, according to the newspaper Diário do Vale.

Lopes, owner of the online newspaper Vassouras na Net, was hit by three bullets in his head, chest and abdomen, according to Vassouras Urgente. Relatives and friends said the journalist covers politics and is known for criticizing authorities.

The journalist told police the shooter was trying to rob him, but police have not ruled out the possibility that he was attacked for his journalistic work, reported iG.

Lopes was taken to the hospital where he was in serious condition, according to Foco Regional.
