A journalist and municipal employee was killed on the morning of Aug. 2 on a beach in the state of Guerrero.
Armed men shot Edgar Alberto Nava López, administrator of the Facebook news page La Verdad de Zihuatanejo, while he was on the beach with a group of children during a tourist activity, according to newspaper El Universal.
Nava López was also director of Regulations and Shows for the municipality of Zihuatanejo.
Omar Bello Pineda, a former colleague of the journalist, told the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) that Nava López told him two months prior about receiving death threats due to “some stories about criminals, who had felt uncomfortable with what he wrote.” Nava López said the stories were taken down, Bello Pineda added.
Nava López previously worked for El Diario de Zihuatanejo and El Despertar de la Costa, according to Bello Pineda.
A statement from the Guerrero State Attorney General’s Office said it was investigating the case and mentioned Nava López’s work as a municipal employee, but not as a journalist.
Jorge Sánchez Allec, municipal president of Zihuatanejo de Azueta, called for an in-depth investigation for his “friend and collaborator” via his Facebook page.
This is the second murder of a journalist from Guerrero this week.
The body of Rogelio Barragán, director of news site Guerrero Al Instante, was found in the trunk of a car in the neighboring state of Morelos on July 30.
CPJ Mexico Representative Jan-Albert Hootsen called for “an immediate and credible investigation” into both murders.
“These two brutal killings within days of each other are the tragic consequence of Mexico’s failure to seriously address impunity in attacks on the press,” he said, according to an organization release.
