Seven legislators flew to D.C. to criticize Ecuador’s controversial draft media law in front of several international groups, including the Organization of American States and Freedom House, El Universo and EFE report.
The opposition politicians argued that the law, which is supported by President Rafael Correa’s administration, violates freedom of expression and the democratic system, AFP explains. They are particularly opposed to the creation of a new Communications Council and a system of punishments for those who violate the new norms.
The former vice-minister of Peoples, Social Movements, and Citizen Participation said the trip was evidence that freedom of expression is alive and well in Ecuador, the state news agency Andes adds.
