Terrorist attack against journalist causes panic in Bogota, Colombia

bomb exploded in Bogota, Colombia, almost taking the life of ex-official turned journalist Fernando Londoño Hoyos, and leaving at least two dead and 40 people injured while creating chaos, panic, and confusion in the capital on Tuesday, May 15, reported the Daily News and the news agency EFE.

The Bogota police assumed the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC in Spanish) were responsible for the terrorist act against Londoño who “had received many threats from the guerrilla for his work as a Minister of Interior and Justice during President Álvaro Uribe's administration, and also as a journalist," reported the news agency Europa Press.

The Foundation for Press Freedom condemned the attack and called on authorities "to move forward in their actions to guarantee the fundamental rights to life and freedom of expression for all Colombian journalists.”

Meanwhile, Reporters Without Borders expressed support for Londoño, but lamented the "polemic and unfavorable" statements that the former minister made against journalist Roméo Langlois, who is still in the hands of the FARC. Londoño accused Langlois of being a “militant activist” and saying that his release would be a “farce.”
