Venezuelan journalist accused of slandering legislator

Actor and Representative Pedro Lander of the Latin American Parliament in Venezuela accused Sara Carolina Díaz, a journalist for the El Universal newspaper, of slander before the Attorney General's office in Caracas, reported the Press and Society Institute.

On Aug. 3, Díaz published an article saying transients saw the representative assault a homeless person near the Capitol. The journalist could not contact the legislator to get a statement on the matter.

Lander, who was an actor for Radio Caracas Television, accused the journalist of damaging his public image and reputation, according to the online newspaper Reportero 24.

Díaz reported the events on her personal Twitter account and minutes later tried to contact Representative Lander by telephone. She was only able to reach his wife Carolina Cestari, director of the National Assembly's radio station, who denied the allegation.
