El Salvador government denies attacking freedom of expression and journalists

"The press secretary of El Salvador (GOES) said in a release that the freedom of expression and journalistic exercise were not in danger in the country.


According to Apes (Journalistic Association in El Salvador), 61 complains were registered as of July 31. International organizations and outlets have spoken up against Bukele's administration's treatment of the press.

The attacks include: authorities preventing journalists from doing their job, blocking access to information, theft of property, harassment and threats via social media. According to Apes, in 2019 alone 77 cases of attacks against journalists were reported."
