"A new alarm was raised in Ecuador after the non-profit Fundamedios reported the infiltration of undercover police agents in private journalist groups. The organization described the incidents as a serious violation of freedom of expression, professional secrecy and privacy, while demanding immediate explanations from the Interior Ministry and the intelligence agency, which have yet to issue a statement.
The alert came after Benito Bonilla, administrator of a press group, publicly expelled a user who turned out to be a sergeant in the National Police. Following that incident, journalists identified at least two more undercover officers and confirmed the presence of uniformed agents in 17 WhatsApp groups used for information exchanges between reporters and state sources."
