Six journalists killed in Latin America so far in September after latest death in Peru

José Oquendo Reyes, director and host of the television program Sin Fronteras, became the third journalist killed in Peru in 2011 and the second television journalist killed in the same week, reported Reporters Without Borders.

Oquendo was gunned down by an unknown assailant on a motorcycle outside his home on Sept. 14, according to the channel RPP.

The killings of two journalists in Mexico, one in Brazil, one in Honduras, and two in Peru, bring to six the fatal attacks against the press in Latin America during the first 15 days of September.

The journalist had accused the mayor of Chincha, Peru of corruption, according to AFP.

The deceased's wife, Marina Juárez, said she was unaware of any previous threats against the journalist, reported the Press and Society Institute. Besides directing the radio and television program, Oquendo previous worked as a construction superintendent and police officer.
