October protest in Mexico City was one of the most violent for the press, report found

With a final tally of 46 Mexican journalists and human rights defenders attacked on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 in the march commemorating the 1968 student massacre at Tlatelolco, the organization Article 19 described this attack on freedom of expression as the most violent in Mexico City during a social protest rally.

In a recent report the freedom of expression organization described the testimonies gathered through the hashtag #RompeElMiedo as a direct attack against the press. Article 19 also called on authorities to provide physical rehabilitation and compensation for the attacks to those affected, to recognize their responsibility and offer an apology, and to bring those responsible to trial.

The report states that there were 120 journalists, human rights defenders, first responders and media workers in the march. It documented 46 cases of aggression, which were committed by police officers (32 cases) unknown aggressors (8), citizen watchdogs (3) and persons whose faces were covered (3).

CNN México, Sinembargo, SDP News and Aristegui News, among other media, have highlighted Article 19's report. Read the full report on Artículo 19's website.
