Minister Rosa Weber, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF, by its Portuguese acronym), ruled that the Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) 7055, in which the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji) alleges the existence of judicial harassment against the press, be analyzed directly in merit by the Plenary. The measure takes into account the topic's relevance and its special significance for the social order and legal indemnity.
In this ADI, Abraji claims that the widespread distribution of several damage repair actions against the same journalist, often spread across the country, which imposes enormous financial costs, clearly characterizes the so-called judicial harassment. The entity's objective is for the Supreme Court to establish that, in actions arising from the exercise of freedom of expression and of the press in which the practice occurs, the competent jurisdiction is the defendant's domicile. Another request is the bringing together of all related lawsuits for joint processing and trial.
