Less than two weeks after the last Cuban journalist was released from prison, opposition reporters have denounced new acts of repression and intimidation from the authorities.
Workers at online news outlet Centro de Información Hablemos Press have reported a series of arrests before and during the Communist Party Congress, held April 16-19.
Over the last three weeks, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that at least ten Hablemos Press correspondents have been held in police stations, placed on house arrest, or threatened with arrest.
"This spike in short-term arrests of journalists during the Communist Party Congress is evidence of the Cuban government's unchanged attitude toward the independent press, despite the releases of imprisoned journalists in recent months," said CPJ program coordinator Carlos Lauría. "We call on Cuban officials to stop detaining and harassing journalists."
