Cameraman Alejandro Márquez was shot in the leg May 10, 2011, during violent disturbances in the city of Medellín, Colombia, Caracol Radio reports.
Masked rioters fought with the police for five hours, leaving one dead and several injured, including Márquez, CM& explains.
According to ElColombiano.com, the bullet wound broke Márquez’s leg, but he was helped by members of the community after being shot: “I saw that the majority of the people that came to help me were women from the community who risked their lives to help me.”
The Federation of Colombian Journalists (FECOLPER) reports another incident of violence against the press involving radio journalist Carlos Sepúlveda. The reporter said he was attacked by a city council candidate, Nelson Millán, in Ibagué while broadcasting his radio program.
