A group of hooded men attacked a news team from the Argentine public television channel Canal 7 during a march commemorating the 38th anniversary of the Sept. 11 military coup in the Chilean capital of Santiago, reported Minutouno.com.
Journalist Mario Giordano, cameraman Teto Novo and technician Gustavo Boxler were part of the team attacked. "We were covering the march, everything was normal, until the end when we saw a fight break out" between police and the hooded men, Giordano explained to Clarín. By the end of the day, police detained 280 people and 45 were injured, including a youth in critical condition, AFP reported.
Giordano was hurt in the back and had to be taken to a hospital where he was later discharged, reported the Télam agency. Although the camera equipment was damaged in the skirmish, the team was able to save the recordings.
The Argentine Journalism Forum urged the Chilean authorities to pursue an investigation. The Union of Press Workers of Buenos Aires also criticized the attack, adding that it was a "brutal aggression," reported UPI.
