Councilman accused of verbally assaulting journalist in southern Brazil

Councilman Paulo Soni, in the city of Maringá (in the Brazilian state of Paraná), is accused of verbally threatening reporter Fábio Linjardi from the newspaper O Diário, that newspaper reported.

Allegedly the politician called the journalist an "idiot." Linjardi said the councilman was upset over an editorial published on the reporter's blog. "In eight years as a reporter, I've never heard [words] like those," he said.

In an interview with Portal Imprensa, Soni accused the journalist of trying to charge the politician for "positive" articles. "He is trying to extort me and it's not going to work. I didn't threaten anyone," the politician said, adding that the journalist made it all up.
