IAPA pushes for Brazil to solve two longstanding journalist killings

By Maira Magro

The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has presented formal charges to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, regarding two Brazilian journalists whose alleged killers remain unpunished, IAPA reports.

Nivanildo Barbosa Lima, a newspaper reporter from Paulo Afonso, Bahia, was killed July 22, 1995, after his paper exposed local death squads. IAPA says the case was closed and later reopened with no success.

Jorge Vieira da Costa, of Rádio Tropical in Teresina, Piauí, was killed March 20, 2001. Three people were convicted of the crime, but only one remains in custody, and IAPA says the alleged masterminds of the killing have never been tried.
