Journalist Silvia González was forced to quit her job at the newspaper El Nuevo Día and flee Nicaragua after receiving several death threats since July 30, 2011, reported the newspaper.
González believes that the threats originated with a series of articles she published in January 2011 on an ex-Contra guerrilla that received weapons from the United States and was accused of corruption, according to Reporters Without Borders.
Political analyst Carlos Tunnermann said freedom of expression is limited in Nicaragua since the government doesn't buy advertisements in independent media and excludes independent journalists from press conferences, according to the newspaper El Nuevo Día.
Despite her complaints to the National Police, González never received the necessary protection. "Nicaraguan authorities must take all necessary measures to ensure that journalists can report critically without fear of reprisal," said Carlos Lauría of the Committee to Protect Journalists.
