Mexican president responds to journalist NGO that denounced harassment of press

By Ingrid Bachmann

In a letter to the executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Mexican President Felipe Calderón acknowledges a letter CPJ sent him a month ago about the increase in the number of cases of attacks and harassment by security forces against the press. The president said that the complaint was sent to the Attorney General's office, which will offer a response.

CPJ long has been calling for federal intervention in the attacks against freedom of speech and crimes against journalists in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world to practice journalism.

On Monday, two journalists -- a married couple -- were killed in the state of Guerrero and according to the Inter American Press Association, it was the sixth killing of journalists this year.
